Startup Grind is a global organization (with 250 chapters worldwide), which exists to educate, to inspire, and to connect startup founders.
We're very excited to announce that Bob Metcalfe will be joining us during Austin Startup Week! He will be joining us for a fireside chat about lessons learned from a life of invention, startups, and companies as they grow.
Internet Hall of Famer Bob Metcalfe is Professor of Innovation and Murchison Fellow of Free Enterprise in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. His mission is to help make Austin a better Silicon Valley.
He earned two bachelor degrees from MIT in 1969, one in electrical engineering and the other in industrial management. He received his master degree in applied mathematics in 1970 and his PhD in computer science in 1973, both from Harvard. He is a Life Trustee of MIT and Member of the National Academy of Engineering.
In 1973 at Xerox Parc, he invented Ethernet, now the Internet's standard plumbing, and in 1979 he founded 3Com Corporation to commercialize the Internet. After 30 years, 3Com became part of Hewlett-Packard Company in 2010. In 2005, Bob received the National Medal of Technology for "leadership in the invention, standardization, and commercialization of Ethernet," of which over a billion new ports are now shipped annually.
