EXPLORATION x DESIGN: Design Leadership | 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
2 Hour Power Session, Yoga Fusion & Design Leadership

YOGA FUSION
Our bodies are the closest form of perfected design we have at our disposal for inspiration and growth. When we practice wellness we are cultivating the intuition necessary to take care of ourselves. Our goal is to be our most efficient selves so we can have energy and time for work and play.
We mix traditional yoga poses with Pilates, resistance training and motivating music. This blending of techniques focuses on combining mind and body exercises with the benefits of strength, aerobics, balance and flexibility.

EFFECTIVE LEADERS SEEK KNOWLEDGE TO MAKE THE BEST POSSIBLE DECISIONS
Designers are moving out of the studio and into the C-Suite. This trend has picked up as our applications of design thinking broadens. But knowing the principles and methods doesn’t make you a design leader. Leadership involves inspiring others to develop their own practice. Leadership isn’t about competition or ego. It’s about cultivating trust amongst peers to bring out the best in people.
Leadership takes the stance that you hire smart, capable people and support their ability to work autonomously without the need of managing every detail. It’s focusing more on outcomes. This can be supported through shared methodologies and aligned principles. But at the end of the day, there are lots of ways to cut an onion and reasons to slice rather than dice. Effective leaders bring out the best in people to make the best decisions possible. Efficiencies are co-created through aligned thinking.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
This intensive 2-hour session is about exploring through meaningful contemplation the qualities of authentic design; as well as, the deeply unique nature of your own personal design practice. You will be guided through an excercise that will provide you with the building blocks to tap into your well of compassion and empathy. Our program will teach you the art of listening and how to incorporate it into your daily practice.

The design track is curated by Austin Design Week, a week of free workshops, studio tours, talks, events and installations celebrating Austin design November 6-10.

6:00pm CDT

Of Boolean Logic, BBSes, Berkeley, and Burning Man: Early ‘90s startup culture in the East Bay | 6:00 - 8:00 PM
Our speaker this month will be Maggie Duval. Maggie is a technology, web, marketing, strategy and development consultant, educator and event producer whose work supports holistic, personalized approaches to learning. She is an expert in creating, curating, and producing unique, immersive workshops and conferences where business, technology and arts dialogue in innovative ways. Her work includes research, development, creation and production of multimedia, participative learning approaches and projects for experiential education such as the SXSW-related events, Plutopia (The Future of Play, The Science of Music, Living Systems) and Cyberpunk 2014: A Retrospective, as well as The Spectral Panopticon, Showdown at Unobtainium: Tesla vs. Edison, STEAM3: The Future of Experiential Learning, and NextECon. Maggie brings her multidimensional vision and expertise in both virtual (website and user interface) and physical (events, workshops, happenings) experiential design. A gifted connector, she also serves to foster collaborative alliances between the Austin community, and beyond.

Maggie will take us on a rollicking journey through her pre “dot.com” days at a logic synthesis software design startup based in Berkeley, California (across from Fantasy Records, Creedance Clearwater Revival’s record label). At the epicenter of the confluence of emergent tech and the World Wide Web, counterculture, art, and social activism, she shows us how the unique corporate culture she moved in, cultivated by an enlightened CEO (a brilliant computer research scientist and ‘60s activist) set the stage for and encouraged her to pursue an entrepreneurial path. She highlights her years as her own web development start up and mom (complete with baby on hip as she met with clients) in a small town in West Virginia, and ending on her move to Austin in 2005, helping foster “Jelly Coworking” culture, which laid the rich ground of being for numerous coworking, apps dev, and other businesses to emerge. Spiced with copious amounts of meticulously curated materials from the era(s), including her stint as co-manager of media relations at Burning Man in 1996, it is designed to provide an enjoyable experience of the promise and possibilities of entrepreneurial life.

Controlling Your Legal Expenses: Smart and Efficient Use of Legal Counsel for Start-Ups | 10:00 - 11:30 AM

Janik Vinnakota LLP and a panel of their startup and legal guests will present on various tips to control startup legal expenses.

Startups face countless challenges as they attempt to grow. Hiring and working with lawyers can seem like the most mundane of all these challenges. Several questions startups always ask are:

  • “How and when should I retain good legal counsel?”
  • “Do my investors really care if I have lawyers?”
  • “How do I manage legal costs without breaking the bank?”

These questions are fairly abstract for any startup and our panel hopes to provide guidance and best practices on how to control legal expenses without sacrificing the necessary legal protection all startups need.

Some of the areas that the panel will discuss include:

  • The pitfalls of using a search engine for legal help and do-it-yourself legal services
  • What to do when your investors bring their own lawyers
  • Ideal solutions for a legal budget for corporate formation, investment, and intellectual property protection
  • Forming a lasting relationship with your legal counsel
  • Using a “virtual” law firm to minimize legal expenses on one-off specialized legal projects

“Trusting” a lawyer is not a joke. Our takeaway is helping you to actually build trust with your lawyer.

Join us for a great panel discussion.

Convertible Notes Demystified | 2:00 - 3:30 PM
Don’t raise any more money for your startup until you’ve attended this workshop!

Join Stephen Straus, serial entrepreneur and former General Partner at Austin Ventures, and Bryan Jones, serial entrepreneur and former corporate lawyer at DLA Piper, for this hands-on workshop on optimizing your equity ownership. They will show entrepreneurs how to calculate the reality of their convertible note fundraising and avoid investment traps.

"Founders face a range of options for raising seed equity, including convertible notes, SAFE notes and priced rounds. Each has a variety of ways that they can be structured and a variety of ways you can get screwed. Raise too much money in the wrong structure regardless of the valuation and you can find yourself owning much less than you had anticipated." - Stephen Straus

Please read the following before attending to gain basic knowledge of topics and terms that will be discussed:

While it’s easy to recognize effective design requires multi perspectives, it’s not always easy to make sure your best intentions are understood across disciplines.

In this panel incorporating business development, market research, user experience, and development, we will discuss strategies and considerations when you know your work will be acted on by downstream practices.

AR: What’s next after Pokemon Go? | 8:00 - 9:30 AM
Augmented reality has shown to have a great deal of wow-factor. In the early days of it's current wave of popularity, even products with relatively simple executions such as furniture placement apps, have garnered much interest. But what’s next for AR?

In this talk, we will share predictions for the future of AR through these angles:  1) Video games 2) Mobility and location-based 3) Social. In doing so, we'll share a useful toolkit for determining types of AR elements and how can they be used to brainstorm good products.

We will demonstrate examples of PTE’s thought process for our AR products including key lessons learned in the "wow vs difficulty" balance, usability for AR,  and the "why factor."

This session's focus audience will be: creative and business founders, developers who are interested in a different creative approach to products, and anyone future-focused and interested in the "what's next" of AR.

The Role of Transit in an Autonomous World | 10:00 - 11:30 AM
The future of American Mobility in the face of autonomous technology remains unknown. However, private mobility service providers are beginning to explore the proposal of using shared autonomous lanes. What is the role of traditional transit operators and cities to preserve existing or develop new dedicated lanes to accommodate the request? Should public operators be the only parties able to use high capacity lanes? In Austin, community leaders are preparing for high capacity transit in dedicated lanes and working with private mobility providers to augment the high-frequency routes. Are those high capacity lanes the first candidates for autonomous routes? In Reno, Proterra is working with the University of Nevada to pilot an autonomous route for high-capacity transit. Learn about the challenges and opportunities for transit in short-term and long-term planning for an autonomous mobility future.

A Startup in Government: The First Year of the City of Austin's Design, Technology, and Innovation Fellows Program | 2:00 - 3:30 PM
Inspired by the design and technology successes at the United States Digital Service and 18F, the City of Austin launched its Design, Technology, and Innovation Fellows program last year with the following goals:

  1. Work directly with departments to deliver the best possible services
  2. Introduce and refine practices for user-centered design
  3. Introduce and refine practices for iterative, open-source development
  4. Establish a creative culture that inspires more people to join the city
Since its launch in Summer 2016, the program has hired more than 25 designers, developers, and other specialists from the private sector to serve tours of duty to improve residential permitting, increase recycling rates, notify residents of low-water crossings during flash floods, and develop practices, training, and infrastructure for more effective digital services. The program has also improved the way that the city approaches user research, iterative design, and open-source development by establishing new standards for field research, interactive prototyping, usability testing, interface design, front-end development, Dev/Ops, and project management.

In this session, Program Lead Ben Guhin and DTI Fellow Marni Wilhite will speak about the challenges of starting a new design and technology organization within city government and share lessons on leadership, culture, and how to structure your work for the greatest possible impact.

Startup Week Design Sprint Essentials Workshop | 6:00 - 8:00 PM
Douglas Ferguson of Voltage Control will lead a workshop covering the essential skills to facilitate your own Design Sprint. Obtain a concrete understanding of how Design Sprints work and get hands-on experience running each exercise.

The Design Sprint
The sprint gives teams a shortcut to learning without building and launching. The sprint is a five-day process for answering critical business questions through design, prototyping and testing ideas with customers. Developed at GV, it’s a “greatest hits” of business strategy, innovation, behavior science, design thinking, and more—packaged into a battle-tested process that any team can use.

Working together in a sprint, you can shortcut the endless-debate cycle and compress months of time into a single week. Instead of waiting to launch a minimal product to understand if an idea is any good, you’ll get clear data from a realistic prototype. The sprint gives you a superpower: You can fast-forward into the future to see your finished product and customer reactions, before making any expensive commitments.

This page is a DIY guide for running your own sprint. On Monday, you’ll map out the problem and pick an important place to focus. On Tuesday, you’ll sketch competing solutions on paper. On Wednesday, you’ll make difficult decisions and turn your ideas into a testable hypothesis. On Thursday, you’ll hammer out a high-fidelity prototype. And on Friday, you’ll test it with real live humans.

The Sprint book
“Read this book and do what it says if you want to build better products faster.” —Ev Williams, founder of Medium and Twitter

New York Times best seller Sprint takes you behind the scenes with some of America’s most fascinating startups. You’ll meet a robotics maker searching for the perfect robot personality, a coffee roaster expanding to new markets, a company organizing the world’s cancer data, and Slack, the fastest-growing business app in history.

A practical guide to answering critical business questions, Sprint is a book for teams of any size, from small startups to Fortune 100s, from teachers to nonprofits. It’s for anyone with a big opportunity, problem, or idea who needs to get answers now.

The design track is curated by Austin Design Week, a week of free workshops, studio tours, talks, events and installations celebrating Austin design November 6-10.

Startup Grind Austin: Fireside Chat With Bob Metcalfe | 6:30 - 9:00 PM
IMPORTANT: A Startup Grind ticket will be required to attend this event. Please make sure that you have one. Thank you for joining us!

--

Startup Grind is a global organization (with 250 chapters worldwide), which exists to educate, to inspire, and to connect startup founders.

We're very excited to announce that Bob Metcalfe will be joining us during Austin Startup Week! He will be joining us for a fireside chat about lessons learned from a life of invention, startups, and companies as they grow.

Internet Hall of Famer Bob Metcalfe is Professor of Innovation and Murchison Fellow of Free Enterprise in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. His mission is to help make Austin a better Silicon Valley.

He earned two bachelor degrees from MIT in 1969, one in electrical engineering and the other in industrial management. He received his master degree in applied mathematics in 1970 and his PhD in computer science in 1973, both from Harvard. He is a Life Trustee of MIT and Member of the National Academy of Engineering.

In 1973 at Xerox Parc, he invented Ethernet, now the Internet's standard plumbing, and in 1979 he founded 3Com Corporation to commercialize the Internet. After 30 years, 3Com became part of Hewlett-Packard Company in 2010. In 2005, Bob received the National Medal of Technology for "leadership in the invention, standardization, and commercialization of Ethernet," of which over a billion new ports are now shipped annually.

This passion ultimately led him to Austin, where he worked at Main Street Hub, and then Facebook on the pages team. JC lives in South Austin in the same cheap apartment where he started the company. His hobbies include traveling, boating, and Cleveland sports.

ZenBusiness' mission is to democratize entrepreneurship and make it as easy for people to build the best business possible. We are revolutionizing the way businesses are created, how legal entities are managed and how their owners deal with all the monthly and annual regulations and “red-tape” of staying in compliance with the government.

Designing Collaboration: A New Approach to Launching and Growing Successful Companies | 8:00 - 9:30 AM
Startups are tough. The personal and business challenges can be enormous--uncertain futures, unclear roles and priorities, huge competition, grueling hours.

But what if there was a way to make it through the chaos of the startup journey that kept you, your people, and your business whole? Even thriving?

In this session, you’ll learn what founders and early-stage teams here in Austin - and huge companies like Google and Slack - have discovered about helping their people better handle the chaos of launch and growth.

You’ll learn:
- The rhythms and habits of unreasonably focused, effective, healthy teams.
- The surprising elements that lead to team effectiveness.
- Concrete ways to shift the way your team deals with disagreements, makes decisions, and approaches setbacks and surprises.

We talk about using design in the way we create products and solve problems for our customers. Come learn how designing the way you work together can often have a bigger, longer term, impact than the work itself.

HotDesQ – $50K-$100K Non-Dilutive Funding in Queensland, Australia | 10:00 - 11:00 AM

Queensland is located on Australia's beautiful northeast coast, home of the Great Barrier Reef, pristine beaches and major metropolitan centers Brisbane and the Gold Coast. It also has a flourishing startup scene thanks in part to a government that is keen to grow the startup ecosystem.  The Queensland government are bullish about wooing promising new companies to Australia so they launched the HotDesQ startup attraction program in 2016.

Startups from across the globe (USA, Canada, UK, Israel, Germany, Chile, Switzerland, Spain, Belgium) have taken advantage of the program, receiving up to $100,000 AUD to locate a founder (or team member) in Queensland for up to a year to work on their Australia and Asia-Pacific strategy.  25 companies (out of 114 applicants) sent team members to Queensland in Round 1 in 2016-17, with another 28 companies (out of 186 applicants) just announced for the next cohort.  In this ASW session you will be among the first to learn of plans for 2018 and work that into your business plan for next year!

Promoting Austin as Part of a Global Tech Ecosystem | 3:00 - 4:30 PM
We live in challenging political times with many countries, including our own, turning inward and working to limit cross-border trade and alliances. Austin has earned a new level of global visibility and is using this stature to build bridges.  In a series of 5-minute "lightning talks," this session will introduce Austin's established diplomatic network to our startup and tech communities, emerging ambassadors for the new economy.  Following the talks there will be a networking reception for further 1:1 conversation.

We'll be hearing from policymakers and influencers from the European Union, Ireland, the City of Austin, GlobalAustin, SXSW, Capital Factory, Austin Startup Week and more.

Food and drink courtesy of the EU - and one lucky attendee will receive a badge to SXSW Interactive 2018 courtesy of SXSW!  Winner must be present and have provided a business card or equivalent at the event before the 4:30 drawing.

After the session, you're welcome (and encouraged) to take part in the ASW Startup Crawl, a great opportunity to learn more about Austin's unique startup community and culture.

EXPLORATION x DESIGN: Meaningful Products + Services | 3:30 - 5:30 PM
Join us for an energizing two-hour session. We'll begin with an hour of yoga fusion that incorporates our signature Mind + Body and The Art of Listening programs.  Follow by asking tough questions concerning how we might develop, interact and experience Meaningful Products + Services.

READY FOR THE EXPERIENCE AGE?
As we enter into the next wave of technology we need to start thinking beyond “stickiness” and “click-throughs”. Our next chapter involves far more profound implications. The Internet of things (IoT) will require privacy and security. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning need to be designed with transparency protections for people. Virtual reality (VR) could potentially take the notion of hallucinogenic experience beyond any door of perception Aldous Huxley could have possibly imagined. We are entering the experience age. It will be immersive and exciting. The lines between reality and virtual will blur into an entire refocus of culture.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
This intensive 2-hour session is about exploring through meaningful contemplation the qualities of authentic design; as well as, the deeply unique nature of your own personal design practice. You will be guided through an excercise that will provide you with the building blocks to create experience maps, service blueprints and conceptualize how products and services must align to the needs of the people who use them.

The design track is curated by Austin Design Week, a week of free workshops, studio tours, talks, events and installations celebrating Austin design November 6-10.

HR impacts business success by creating thoughtful and inclusive workplace cultures. During this session, Courtney Branson, Director of Culture + People will explore how to tackle culture at every stage of business, and why overlooking this strategic piece of HR may lead to toxic environments, legal hiccups, and rapid turnover.

Using real-world anecdotes and personal experiences, Courtney will set the scene for how toxic culture is born and bred, exploring also the potentially devastating business impact. In addition, she’ll provide practical examples of how to nurture a “people-first” mentality throughout the organization - whether you’re a group of 3 or 300, including: embarking on a feedback journey and infusing your values into everything including your leadership.
